The touring New Zealand Middleweights team face Beecroft’s Whippets, who are their under-85kg equivalents and won the NSW Suburban title last year.

“The strength of 85kg rugby in New Zealand is ahead in leaps and bounds of what it is in Australia,” he said.

Whippets no lightweights when they hit the field.  SUBURBAN Rugby Union’s all-conquering Beecroft Whippets Under 85kg team will take on the touring New Zealand National Middleweights in a trans-Tasman showdown here on Friday, March 20.

The match will be under lights at the Whippets’ Headen Park, Thornleigh, home ground.

Beecroft Rugby Club president Howard Baynie views the contest as a kick-start to the 2009 rugby season.

“With both teams at full strength and with big local support as well as expatriate Kiwis it should be a great event,” he said.

Securing the fixture reflects the international reputation the Beecroft side has built within the NSW Suburban Rugby structure.

“The touring side actually sought to play us as reigning champions of the ‘lightweight’ division,” Beecroft coaching director Steve Broughton-Rouse said.

Rugby aficionados regard the Under 85kg as their code “at its old-fashioned best”.

Headen Park is at Sinclair Avenue, Thornleigh.

Kick-off will be at 6.30pm
